Stages of Revelation of the Quran
Key Takeaways
The Quran was revealed in two distinct phases: first from the Preserved Tablet to the lowest heaven, then gradually to the Prophet ﷺ over 23 years.
Quranic revelation began in Makkah with matters of faith and creed, then continued in Madinah addressing law, community, and social structure.
The revelation spanned approximately 23 years — 13 years in Makkah and 10 years in Madinah — according to the strongest scholarly position.
The gradual revelation was a divine wisdom specifically designed to strengthen the Prophet’s heart and address real community needs.

The Quran is unlike any other book in human history — it was not compiled and handed down in a single moment but descended in living stages, responding to real events, real questions, and real human struggles.

The Quran was revealed across two major phases spanning roughly 23 years. The first phase brought it from the Preserved Tablet (Al-Lawh Al-Mahfuz) to the lowest heaven in its entirety on Laylat al-Qadr. The second phase delivered it gradually — verse by verse and passage by passage — to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ through the Angel Jibreel, aligned with the unfolding events of the early Muslim community.

1. The Quran Was Preserved on Al-Lawh Al-Mahfuz Before Any Revelation to Earth

The stages of revelation begin long before the first word reached the Prophet ﷺ. The Quran existed first in its complete, eternal form on Al-Lawh Al-Mahfuz — the Preserved Tablet — a reality affirmed by Allah directly in the Quran itself.

بَلْ هُوَ قُرْآنٌ مَّجِيدٌ ۝ فِي لَوْحٍ مَّحْفُوظٍ

Bal huwa Qur’ānun majīd. Fī lawḥin maḥfūẓ.

“But this is an honored Qur’an, [Inscribed] in a Preserved Slate.” (Al-Buruj 85:21–22)

This stage has no human timeline — it is pre-temporal, belonging to the realm of divine knowledge.

Classical scholars of Uloom Al-Quran (Quranic Sciences) affirm that this inscription on the Preserved Tablet represents the Quran in its complete and eternal form. It is the starting point of any serious discussion of Quranic revelation.

2. The Quran Descended in Its Entirety to Bayt Al-‘Izzah in the Lowest Heaven on Laylat Al-Qadr

The second stage marks the Quran’s entry into the created world. Allah brought the entire Quran down — whole and complete — from the Preserved Tablet to Bayt Al-‘Izzah (the House of Honor) in the lowest heaven (Al-Sama’ Al-Dunya). This descent occurred on Laylat al-Qadr, the Night of Decree.

إِنَّا أَنزَلْنَاهُ فِي لَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ

Innā anzalnāhu fī laylati l-qadr.

“Indeed, We sent it down during the Night of Decree.” (Al-Qadr 97:1)

Stage 2Lowest Heaven (Bayt Al-‘Izzah)Complete, wholeLaylat al-Qadr
Stage 3To the Prophet ﷺ on EarthGradual, verse by verse23 years

3. The First Revelation Came to the Prophet ﷺ in the Cave of Hira Through Angel Jibreel

The third stage — and the beginning of the Quran’s direct contact with humanity — occurred in the Cave of Hira on the Mountain of Light (Jabal al-Nour) near Makkah. The Prophet ﷺ was 40 years old. The Angel Jibreel appeared and commanded him to read.

اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ

Iqra’ bismi rabbika alladhī khalaq.

“Recite in the name of your Lord who created.” (Al-‘Alaq 96:1)

These five verses — the opening of Surah Al-‘Alaq — were the first Quranic words to descend upon the Prophet ﷺ. This is established by authentic hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari, where the account of the first revelation is narrated in detail through Aisha.

The trembling, the embrace of Jibreel, and Khadijah’s steadfast support — this moment marks the beginning of 23 years of ongoing revelation.

4. A Period of Pause (Fatrat Al-Wahy) Followed Before Revelation Resumed

After the first verses of Surah Al-‘Alaq, revelation paused for a period known as Fatrat al-Wahy — the Interval of Revelation. Scholars differ on its duration.

This pause caused the Prophet ﷺ deep anxiety. He longed for the return of the Angel. When revelation resumed with Surah Al-Muddaththir, the command was immediate and active:

يَا أَيُّهَا الْمُدَّثِّرُ ۝ قُمْ فَأَنذِرْ

Yā ayyuha l-muddaththir. Qum fa-andhir.

“O you who covers himself, arise and warn.” (Al-Muddaththir 74:1–2)

The divine wisdom in this pause was significant: it allowed the Prophet ﷺ to absorb and fully internalize the weight of his mission before the demands of prophethood accelerated.

The interval also made the return of revelation more deeply felt and welcomed — a pattern consistent with the Quran’s broader approach of gradual, mercy-driven instruction.

5. The Makkan Period of Revelation Focused on Faith, Tawhid, and the Hereafter for 13 Years

With revelation restored, the Makkan phase began in earnest — the longest single period of Quranic revelation, spanning approximately 13 years.

The Makkan Surahs are defined by their focus: Tawhid (the Oneness of Allah), the reality of the Hereafter, the stories of the Prophets, and the moral and spiritual formation of the earliest Muslim community.

CharacteristicMakkan Surahs
Primary ThemeTawhid, Iman, Akhirah
TonePowerful, rhythmic, urgent
Typical LengthShorter surahs with shorter verses
Audience AddressedAll humanity (Yā ayyuha al-nās)
Key ExamplesAl-Fatiha, Al-Ikhlas, Al-Mulk, Maryam

The early Muslims in Makkah were a persecuted minority — they needed verses that anchored their faith and fortified their hearts. The Makkan revelation answered that need directly.

Surahs like Maryam, Ya-Sin, and Al-Kahf provided believers with narrative strength, spiritual certainty, and the conviction to endure oppression without abandoning their deen.

6. The Madinan Period of Revelation Addressed Law, Governance, and Community for 10 Years

After the Hijra to Madinah in the 13th year of Prophethood, the nature of revelation shifted markedly. The Muslim community now had a state, a city, and the responsibility of governance.

The Madinan Surahs addressed the full spectrum of Islamic law (Fiqh), interfaith relations, family law, financial ethics, military conduct, and the organization of the Muslim community.

CharacteristicMadinan Surahs
Primary ThemeShariah, community law, social ethics
ToneLegislative, detailed, explanatory
Typical LengthLonger surahs with longer verses
Audience AddressedOften Believers (Yā ayyuha alladhīna āmanū)
Key ExamplesAl-Baqarah, Al-Imran, Al-Nisa, Al-Ma’idah

Surah Al-Baqarah — the longest surah in the Quran — is Madinan, covering prayer, fasting, pilgrimage, inheritance, debt contracts, and the ethics of marriage and divorce. This legislative richness reflects the community’s maturity and readiness for detailed divine guidance.

The contrast between Makkan and Madinan revelation is one of the most important analytical frameworks in Uloom Al-Quran. We cover this distinction in depth within Buruj Academy’s Quran Reading course, helping students contextualize what they recite rather than simply decode its letters.

7. Many Verses Were Revealed in Direct Response to Specific Events (Asbab Al-Nuzul)

Not all Quranic verses descended according to a predetermined sequential schedule. A significant portion of the Quran was revealed as Asbab al-Nuzul — causes or occasions of revelation — responding to specific questions, incidents, or community crises as they arose.

This responsive dimension of revelation is one of the strongest proofs of the Quran’s divine origin. No human author could have consistently produced responses that were simultaneously timely, legally precise, spiritually profound, and linguistically extraordinary.

Examples of occasion-based revelation:

  • Verses about inheritance laws (An-Nisa 4:11–12) were revealed in response to the death of a companion whose daughters were denied their share.
  • Verses vindicating Aisha (ra) (An-Nur 24:11–20) were revealed following the Hadith al-Ifk incident — false accusations that caused the community deep distress.

Studying Asbab al-Nuzul is a discipline in itself — it deepens comprehension of Quranic legislation and connects the text to the living history of the Prophet’s ﷺ community.

This knowledge is also foundational for anyone studying Tajweed rules at an advanced level, where contextual understanding supports correct recitation with meaning.

8. The Final Verse Was Revealed Before the Prophet’s ﷺ Farewell, Completing the Quran

The last stage of Quranic revelation marks the completion of the divine message. Scholars hold that one of the final — if not the final — verse revealed was:

الْيَوْمَ أَكْمَلْتُ لَكُمْ دِينَكُمْ وَأَتْمَمْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ نِعْمَتِي وَرَضِيتُ لَكُمُ الْإِسْلَامَ دِينًا

Al-yawma akmaltu lakum dīnakum wa-atmamtu ‘alaykum ni’matī wa-raḍītu lakumu l-islāma dīnā.

“This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion.” (Al-Ma’idah 5:3)

This verse was revealed on the Day of Arafah during the Farewell Pilgrimage — the 9th of Dhul Hijjah, 10 AH. The Prophet ﷺ passed away approximately 81 days later. The completion of revelation was thus intimately tied to the completion of the Prophet’s mission on earth.

Some scholars note that certain verses concerning financial matters (riba) may have been among the very last revealed, based on narrations concerning the sequence of late Madinan verses.

Scholarly discussion on the precise last verse continues, reflecting the richness of the Uloom Al-Quran tradition.

Conclusion

The Quran’s journey from the Preserved Tablet to the heart of humanity spans stages that are as theologically rich as they are historically significant. From its eternal inscription before creation, through its complete descent on Laylat al-Qadr, to 23 years of measured, purposeful revelation across Makkah and Madinah — every stage carries divine wisdom.

Understanding these stages transforms recitation into a more conscious act of worship. When we read a Makkan surah’s urgent call to faith or a Madinan verse’s precise legal ruling, we recognize the context that gave each word its weight.

That awareness deepens both our recitation and our relationship with the Quran — and it is precisely the kind of depth that Buruj Academy’s teaching team builds into every course we teach.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Stages of Revelation of the Quran

How Many Years Did the Revelation of the Quran Take?

The Quran was revealed over approximately 23 years — 13 years during the Makkan period and 10 years during the Madinan period. This is the position adopted by the majority of scholars of Uloom Al-Quran, based on the most reliable narrations regarding the timeline of the Prophet’s ﷺ prophethood and migration.

What Is the Difference Between Makkan and Madinan Surahs?

Makkan surahs generally focus on Tawhid, faith fundamentals, the Hereafter, and moral character. They tend to be shorter, rhythmically powerful, and address all of humanity. Madinan surahs focus on Islamic law, community organization, and social ethics, tend to be longer, and often address believers specifically with detailed legislative guidance.

Why Was the Quran Not Revealed All at Once?

The gradual revelation (tanjeem) served multiple divine wisdoms: it strengthened the Prophet’s heart incrementally, allowed the community to absorb and practice each verse, responded directly to unfolding events, and made memorization and implementation far more effective. Allah addresses this directly in Al-Furqan 25:32, affirming the revelation came stage by stage to firmly establish it.

What Was the First Surah Revealed in the Quran?

The first verses revealed were the opening five verses of Surah Al-‘Alaq (96:1–5), beginning with Iqra’ (“Recite”), in the Cave of Hira. These verses established the core themes of knowledge, creation, and human accountability that would define the Quran’s message.
