Can I Recite Quran While Lying Down?
Key Takeaways
Reciting Quran while lying down is permitted in Islam, supported by Quran (3:191) and authentic hadith evidence.
The Prophet ﷺ recited Quran while reclining in Aisha’s lap, as recorded in both Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.
Wudu is not required for oral recitation from memory while lying down, but is required to physically touch the Mushaf.
Lying on your stomach during recitation is discouraged based on an authentic hadith narrated by Abu Dharr.
Recitation in any position remains valid and rewarding — the priority is consistency of engagement with the Quran.

Many Muslims wonder whether their late-night Quran recitation in bed, or their quiet recitation while resting, is actually acceptable. The question is completely natural — we all want to ensure our worship is valid.

Can I Recite Quran While Lying Down?

Yes, you can recite Quran while lying down. Scholarly consensus, supported by direct Quranic verses and authentic hadith, confirms that recitation is permitted in all positions — standing, sitting, or lying on your side or back — with one important distinction regarding how you interact with the Mushaf.

What Does the Quran Say About Reciting in All Positions?

The Quran itself directly addresses remembrance and recitation in multiple physical positions, leaving no scholarly ambiguity on this point. Allah ﷻ describes the believers in Surah Aal Imran:

الَّذِينَ يَذْكُرُونَ اللَّهَ قِيَامًا وَقُعُودًا وَعَلَىٰ جُنُوبِهِمْ

Alladhīna yadhkurūnallāha qiyāman wa qu’ūdan wa ‘alā junūbihim

“Who remember Allah while standing or sitting or [lying] on their sides.” (Aal Imran 3:191)

Quranic recitation is dhikr — in fact, it is the highest form of dhikr. This verse therefore directly validates recitation while lying on your side.

A second verse reinforces this in Surah An-Nisa:

فَإِذَا قَضَيْتُمُ الصَّلَاةَ فَاذْكُرُوا اللَّهَ قِيَامًا وَقُعُودًا وَعَلَىٰ جُنُوبِكُمْ

Fa-idhā qadaytum as-salāta fadhkurullāha qiyāman wa qu’ūdan wa ‘alā junūbikum

“And when you have completed the prayer, remember Allah standing, sitting, or [lying] on your sides.” (An-Nisa 4:103)

Both verses make the same point: the remembrance of Allah — which includes Quran recitation — is encouraged in all three physical positions.

For students who are building a consistent Quran reading habit, our Quran Reading Course at Buruj Academy covers the practical etiquettes of recitation alongside proper reading technique, taught by Ijazah-certified instructors who guide students through both the fiqh and the fluency dimensions of reading Quran.

Did the Prophet ﷺ Recited Quran While Lying Down?

Yes, the Prophet ﷺ recited the Quran while lying down. Aisha (رضي الله عنها) narrated:

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to recline in my lap while I was menstruating, and he would recite the Quran.”

This hadith is recorded in both Sahih al-Bukhari (hadith 7549) and Sahih Muslim (hadith 301), giving it the highest level of authenticity in hadith classification.

Imam al-Nawawi (رحمه الله), commenting on this hadith in his Sharh Sahih Muslim, stated explicitly: “This hadith establishes the permissibility of reciting Quran while lying down and while reclining.”

Two points stand out from this narration.

First, the Prophet ﷺ was reclining — not upright — while reciting.

Second, the narration mentions Aisha was in a state of menstruation, which scholars note to confirm that even ritual impurity nearby does not invalidate recitation from memory.

Is There Any Difference Between Lying on Your Right Side, Left Side, or Back While Reciting?

No scholarly position restricts recitation based on whether you lie on your right side, left side, or your back. All three are included in the phrase عَلَى جُنُوبِهِمْ (on their sides) referenced in the Quranic verses above.

The table below summarizes the permissibility of each position:

PositionPermissibility for Oral RecitationPermissibility for Reading from Mushaf
StandingFully permittedPermitted with wudu
SittingFully permittedPermitted with wudu
Lying on right sideFully permittedPermitted with wudu
Lying on left sideFully permittedPermitted with wudu
Lying on backFully permittedPermitted with wudu
Lying on stomachDiscouraged (see below)Discouraged

The primary consideration is not the direction of lying, but rather whether you are touching the Mushaf — which brings a separate ruling entirely.

Is Lying on Your Stomach Allowed During Quran Recitation?

Lying on your stomach during any activity — including Quran recitation — is discouraged in Islamic practice. Abu Dharr (رضي الله عنه) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ passed by him while he was lying on his stomach, nudged him with his foot, and said:

“O Junaidib! This is how the people of Hell lie.” Sunan Ibn Majah 3724.

The ruling derived from this narration is that lying prone (on the stomach) is makruh — discouraged — as a general body position, regardless of what activity one is engaged in.

Reciting Quran in this position is therefore not recommended, though it does not invalidate the recitation itself.

We advise our students at Buruj Academy to be mindful of this distinction: the goal is to honor the Quran in our habits, and avoiding this position is a simple way to do so.

Do You Need Wudu to Recite Quran While Lying Down?

This is where many students confuse two separate rulings, and clarifying the distinction is important.

ScenarioWudu Required?
Oral recitation from memory (lying down or any position)Not required
Reading from a Mushaf (physical copy)Required — you must have wudu to touch the Mushaf
Using a phone or tablet to read QuranScholarly difference of opinion — wudu is strongly recommended
Recitation during major ritual impurity (janabah)Prohibited until ghusl is performed

The ruling on touching the Mushaf is based on the widely accepted scholarly position drawn from the verse لَّا يَمَسُّهُ إِلَّا الْمُطَهَّرُونَ“None shall touch it except the purified” (Al-Waqi’ah 56:79) — and the letter of the Prophet ﷺ to Amr ibn Hazm prohibiting touching the Quran without purification.

Sheikh Salih al-Fawzan stated clearly on this matter: oral Quran recitation while lying down is permitted for a person in a state of minor ritual impurity (hadath asghar).

However, if the recitation is from the Mushaf, wudu is required before touching it — regardless of position.

What Are the Recommended Etiquettes of Quran Recitation?

Permissibility and optimal practice are two different things. The scholars enumerate a set of recommended etiquettes (adab) for Quran recitation that, while not obligatory, elevate the quality and spiritual benefit of one’s recitation.

EtiquetteStatusNote
Being in a state of wuduRecommended (mustahabb)Not obligatory for oral recitation
Facing the QiblahRecommendedAdds reverence to the act
Sitting uprightRecommendedNot obligatory
Reciting with tajweedObligatory for full recitationSee below
Beginning with Ta’awwudhRecommendedBased on Surah An-Nahl 16:98
Reciting with focus and reflectionStrongly recommendedPart of tadabbur

The absence of any of these etiquettes does not make the recitation impermissible. Recitation remains valid and rewarding in any permitted position. The scholars are explicit on this: losing an etiquette removes a degree of reward but does not create prohibition.

In our experience teaching non-Arabic speaking adults at Buruj Academy, students often feel guilty reciting Quran in bed because they assume it is “less proper.” We reassure them: your nighttime recitation while lying down is valid, rewarded, and encouraged. Do not let the perfect be the enemy of the consistent

Should You Maintain Tajweed Rules While Reciting Lying Down?

Yes — the obligation of reciting with proper tajweed applies regardless of your physical position. The rules of tajweed are attached to the recitation itself, not to the posture of the reciter.

If you are still building your tajweed foundation, lying down to recite from memory is a perfectly valid practice space.

However, if you are reading from the Mushaf, the same obligations apply: proper makhraj (articulation), correct sifat (letter attributes), and accurate application of rules like ghunnah, madd, and qalqalah.

Our Online Tajweed Classes at Buruj Academy are designed for students at every level — including those who recite regularly but want to audit and correct their existing habits. Our Al-Azhar-trained instructors use the Buruj Method’s sound-before-rules approach, which means you train your ear to hear correct recitation before learning rule terminology.

Conclusion

Reciting Quran while lying down is not only permitted — it is supported by direct Quranic instruction and the authentic practice of the Prophet ﷺ. The permissibility covers lying on your right side, left side, or back, whether or not you have wudu, as long as you are not physically touching the Mushaf without purification.

The scholars are clear: what matters most is your engagement with the Quran. Maintaining recommended etiquettes adds reward, but their absence does not invalidate or prohibit your recitation. Keep reciting — Insha’Allah, every letter counts.

Frequently Asked Questions About Reciting Quran While Lying Down

Can I Read Quran Lying Down Without Wudu?

Yes, you can recite Quran from memory while lying down without wudu — this is the position of the majority of scholars. However, if you are reading from a physical Mushaf, wudu is required before touching it. For major ritual impurity (janabah), recitation from memory is also not permitted until ghusl is performed.

Is It Disrespectful to Recite Quran in Bed?

No — reciting Quran in bed is not disrespectful. The Prophet ﷺ himself recited Quran while reclining, as authentically reported. Scholars distinguish between what is recommended (sitting upright, facing Qiblah) and what is obligatory. Recitation in bed is valid and rewarded, though sitting upright when able carries additional spiritual merit.

Can I Recite Quran While Lying on My Left Side?

Yes, lying on your left side during recitation is permitted. The Quranic phrase عَلَى جُنُوبِهِمْ (on their sides) used in Aal Imran 3:191 does not specify right or left. No scholarly position restricts recitation to one side. The only discouraged position is lying on your stomach, based on the hadith of Abu Dharr in Sunan al-Tirmidhi.

Does My Recitation Count if I Fall Asleep While Reading Quran?

Your recitation counts for everything you completed before sleep. Falling asleep while reciting is not sinful — it is a sign of how naturally the Quran can accompany your quiet moments. Scholars note that even intending to recite and then sleeping carries reward, Insha’Allah, based on the principle that intentions precede actions.

Can Children Recite Quran While Lying Down?

Yes — children may recite Quran while lying down. The same rulings apply: oral recitation from memory is permitted in any position. For children reading from the Mushaf, teaching them the habit of wudu before touching it builds good foundational practice. Our Hifz for Kids course incorporates these etiquettes naturally as part of the memorization curriculum.
