What Is Tafseer

I Used to Read the Quran ‘Blindly’: How Tafseer Opened My Eyes – What Is Tafseer

For many years of my life, my interaction with the Quran was, in hindsight, a bit like looking at a beautifully wrapped gift without ever opening it. I would recite the verses, sometimes with a melodious tone, other times simply trying to get through a certain portion. I knew it was the word of Allah, sacred and profound, and I felt a sense of peace when I heard it or recited it. However, a crucial piece of the puzzle was missing, What is Tafseer. I could read the Arabic script, and I even understood some common words, but the deeper context, the nuances, the true wisdom behind the verses often eluded me. Then I was, in essence, reading ‘blindly,’ moving from one verse to the next without truly grasping its profound message and guidance. I didn’t even fully understand what is Tafseer, let alone why it was so essential. This basic lack of knowledge created a disconnect, preventing me from fully experiencing the Quran’s transformative power. This is the story of how that changed, and how Tafseer quite literally opened my eyes.

The Unopened Gift: My Early Encounters with the Quran

My journey with the Quran began like many others: learning to recognize the Arabic alphabet and string together words. I learned the rules of Tajweed to ensure proper pronunciation, and I practiced reciting until I could do so without too many stumbles. I memorized short surahs for prayer. All of this was valuable and necessary, but it was primarily focused on the mechanics of reading.   I would often pick up an English translation, hoping it would unlock the meanings. While translations provided a literal sense, they often left me with more questions than answers. Why was this story mentioned here? What was the context of this ruling? What did this particular metaphor truly signify? The beauty of the Arabic prose was evident, but its profound depth remained obscured.   I’d hear scholars or imams mention “Tafseer” in their lectures, but the term itself sounded academic and distant. I imagined it was a field of study reserved for highly educated individuals, those who dedicated their lives to religious scholarship. The average person, I thought, simply reads the translation and tries their best. This basic lack of knowledge about what is Tafseer and its accessibility prevented me from even considering it. It felt like an exclusive club I wasn’t invited to.

The Spark of Curiosity: “There Must Be More!”

The turning point came gradually. I was going through a particularly challenging phase in my life, seeking solace and guidance. So, I turned to the Quran, as I always did, but this time, the words felt even more distant. I yearned for a deeper connection, a clearer message. And I started asking myself: “If this is Allah’s direct message to humanity, surely it’s meant to be understood, not just recited beautifully?”   I began to actively question what I was missing. I heard a friend discuss a verse and its context with such profound insight that it struck me: “She understands something I don’t.” When I asked her, she simply said, “Oh, I was just reading the Tafseer for that verse.” That was it. That simple statement ignited my curiosity. “Tafseer.” The word, once so intimidating, now held a new allure. I decided I needed to truly understand what is Tafseer and how it could help me.

Unveiling the Meaning: What is Tafseer?

I began my research, starting with the most basic question: what is Tafseer? I learned that Tafseer (تفسير) literally means “explanation” or “exegesis.” In the context of the Quran, it refers to the science of explaining the meanings of the Quranic verses, clarifying their implications, and extracting wisdom and rulings from them. It’s not just a translation; it’s a comprehensive commentary that delves into:
  1. Linguistic Meanings: Explaining obscure words, grammatical structures, and rhetorical devices in the Arabic language.
  2. Context of Revelation (Asbab al-Nuzul): Understanding the specific historical circumstances, events, or questions that led to the revelation of particular verses. This is crucial for understanding the immediate relevance and application.
  3. Connection to the Sunnah: Explaining verses in light of the sayings, actions, and approvals of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), which often clarify and elaborate on the Quran.
  4. Views of the Companions (Sahabah): Their proximity to the Prophet and direct experience with the revelation made their understanding invaluable.
  5. Connections Between Verses and Chapters: How different parts of the Quran relate to and illuminate each other.
  6. Derived Rulings and Wisdom: Extracting legal injunctions, moral lessons, spiritual insights, and guidance for daily life.
It was like discovering that the beautiful wrapped gift actually contained an intricate, multi-layered treasure map. My understanding of what is Tafseer moved from an abstract academic concept to a practical tool for spiritual illumination.

My Journey with Tafseer: Opening the Gift

With this newfound understanding, I decided to embark on my Tafseer journey. I started with an accessible English Tafseer (like Tafsir As-Sa'di or Ma'ariful Quran abridged, as recommended by a local scholar). I picked a small Surah that I knew well from prayers, like Surah Al-Fatiha, to begin. The experience was transformative. When I read Surah Al-Fatiha with Tafseer, it was no longer just a recitation. “Alhamdulillahi Rabbil ‘Alamin” (All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds) transformed from a phrase into a profound declaration. I learned about the comprehensive nature of “Alhamdulillah,” encompassing all forms of praise, and “Rabbil ‘Alamin” as Allah being the Sustainer, Cherisher, and Provider for all creation, not just Muslims. The depth of gratitude and awe that filled my heart was immense. As I continued, verse after verse, the Quran began to speak to me in ways it never had before.
  • Understanding context: When I read verses about hypocrisy in Madinah, learning about the asbab al-nuzul helped me understand the challenges the early Muslim community faced and the eternal lessons about sincerity.
  • Connecting with the Prophet’s life: Tafseer helped me see how the Prophet’s life (Seerah) was a living embodiment of the Quran, providing practical examples of its teachings.
  • Clarifying seemingly difficult verses: Some verses, taken out of context, can be confusing. Tafseer provided the necessary background and explanation, removing my confusion and bolstering my faith.
  • Gaining practical guidance: I started finding direct answers and timeless wisdom for my own challenges, from managing anger to nurturing patience, from strengthening family ties to understanding my purpose in life.
My reading went from a blind obligation to an eager quest for knowledge. Each new insight felt like a layer of fog lifting, revealing the stunning landscape of divine wisdom. The Quran was no longer just a book I recited; it became a living guide, a source of comfort, and a constant companion.

Why Tafseer is Essential for Every Muslim

My experience taught me that Tafseer is not an optional extra, nor is it exclusively for scholars. It is a fundamental tool for every Muslim who wants to truly understand and live by the Quran.
  1. Deepens Connection: It moves us beyond superficial recitation to a profound engagement with Allah’s words.
  2. Prevents Misinterpretation: Understanding the context and scholarly explanations protects us from misunderstanding verses or falling into extreme interpretations.
  3. Enhances Practice: When you understand the meaning of the verses you recite in Salah, your prayer becomes more focused, heartfelt, and impactful.
  4. Provides Guidance: The Quran is a guide for all aspects of life. Tafseer helps us extract and apply that guidance effectively.
  5. Strengthens Faith: Understanding the miraculous nature of the Quran, its consistency, and its profound wisdom strengthens one’s iman (faith).
If you’ve ever felt like you’re reading the Quran ‘blindly,’ or if you’ve wondered what is Tafseer and why it matters, I implore you: open that gift. Start with an accessible Tafseer in your language, even just a few verses at a time. It will change your relationship with the Quran forever, transforming it from a distant, revered text into a vibrant, guiding light in your daily life.
