The Story of Zakariya in the Quran for Kids
Key Takeaways
Prophet Zakariya (AS) is mentioned in the Quran across multiple surahs, including Maryam, Al-Anbiya, and Al-Imran, as a patient, devoted prophet.
Zakariya (AS) made a heartfelt, secret dua to Allah asking for a son despite his old age and his wife’s inability to conceive.
Allah answered Zakariya’s dua by blessing him with Prophet Yahya (AS) — a miracle that teaches children the power of sincere supplication.
Zakariya (AS) was asked to observe three days of silence as a sign of gratitude, showing children that Allah’s gifts come with purpose.
The story of Zakariya in the Quran teaches kids that no dua is too big for Allah, and patience always leads to beautiful rewards.

Every child deserves stories that fill their heart with wonder — not fairy tales, but true stories of real prophets who cried, hoped, and prayed to Allah. The story of Prophet Zakariya (AS) is exactly that kind of story.

Prophet Zakariya (AS) was an old man with white hair, a tired body, and one unshakeable hope: that Allah would give him a son. He made dua in secret, with a trembling voice, and Allah — in His infinite mercy — answered. This is the story of faith, patience, and one of the Quran’s most beautiful miracles.

Who Was Prophet Zakariya (AS)?

Prophet Zakariya (AS) was one of Allah’s chosen prophets, sent to guide the Children of Israel. He was a righteous, devoted man who worked as a caretaker of the sacred temple — a role he took with the deepest sincerity and love for Allah.

He was also the guardian of Maryam (AS), the mother of Prophet Isa (AS). Every time Zakariya (AS) entered Maryam’s prayer chamber, he found fresh food waiting for her — food that he had not brought.

“He said, “O Mary, from where is this [coming] to you?” She said, “It is from Allah. Indeed, Allah provides for whom He wills without account.” (Aal-Imran 3:37)

When Zakariya (AS) asked Maryam where the food came from, she said simply: it was from Allah. That moment lit a spark in Zakariya’s heart.

If Allah could provide food for Maryam with no earthly means, then surely Allah could grant him a child — despite every worldly impossibility.

1. Zakariya (AS) Was Very Sad Because He had No Children

Prophet Zakariya (AS) had a deep, quiet sadness that he carried for many years. He had no children, and he and his wife had grown very old. In those times, having a righteous son meant having someone to continue Allah’s message after you — to carry the light forward.

Zakariya (AS) worried. He loved Allah deeply, and he wanted someone to inherit that love — his knowledge, his devotion, his mission.

He was not greedy. He was not demanding. He simply longed, with the purest kind of longing, for a child who would walk in the path of Allah after him.

This longing is described beautifully in Surah Maryam. Allah records Zakariya’s own words in the Quran — words that parents can read to their children so they understand how a prophet speaks to his Lord:

قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّى وَهَنَ ٱلْعَظْمُ مِنِّى وَٱشْتَعَلَ ٱلرَّأْسُ شَيْبًۭا وَلَمْ أَكُن بِدُعَآئِكَ رَبِّ شَقِيًّۭا

Qāla rabbi innī wahana l-‘aẓmu minnī wash-ta’ala r-ra’su shayban wa lam akun bidu’ā’ika rabbi shaqiyyā

“He said: My Lord, indeed my bones have weakened, and my head has filled with white, and never have I been in my supplication to You, my Lord, unhappy.” (Maryam 19:4)

Tell your child: Zakariya (AS) reminded Allah — gently, humbly — that he had never made a dua and been disappointed. He was not complaining. He was trusting.

2. Zakariya (AS) Made His Special Dua

Zakariya (AS) did not shout his dua. He did not make it in front of people, hoping to be seen. He went somewhere private, and he called upon Allah in the softest, most private voice possible.

Idh nādā rabbahu nidā’an khafiyyā

“When he called to his Lord a private supplication.” (Maryam 19:3)

Narrate it to your child this way: Zakariya (AS) went into a quiet room. He closed his eyes. He lowered his voice to almost a whisper — because he knew that Allah hears even the softest word, even the thought inside your heart. And in that quiet, he asked.

He asked for a son. A good son. A son who would love Allah and continue his work. He asked even though he was old.

He asked even though it seemed impossible. Because Zakariya (AS) knew something that we must teach our children: nothing is impossible for Allah.

What Made Zakariya’s Dua SpecialWhy It Matters for Kids
He made it in private, not for showTeaches sincerity in dua
He mentioned his lifelong devotionTeaches confidence in asking
He acknowledged his weakness honestlyTeaches humility
He still believed Allah could do the impossibleTeaches trust (tawakkul)
He asked for a righteous child, not just any childTeaches the right intentions in dua

3. Allah Answered Zakariya’s (AS) Dua

The answer came — and it came in a way that must have made Zakariya’s (AS) heart stop for a moment with pure, overwhelming joy.

He was standing in prayer, in the sanctuary, when the angels called out to him. Not in a dream. Not in a sign. Directly, clearly, with the most beautiful news:

فَنَادَتْهُ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ وَهُوَ قَآئِمٌۭ يُصَلِّى فِى ٱلْمِحْرَابِ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُبَشِّرُكَ بِيَحْيَىٰ

Fa-nādathu l-malā’ikatu wa huwa qā’imun yuṣallī fi l-miḥrābi anna llāha yubashshiruka bi-Yaḥyā

“So the angels called him while he was standing in prayer in the chamber: Indeed, Allah gives you good tidings of Yahya.” (Aal-Imran 3:39)

Tell your child: He was praying — right in the middle of his prayer — when the angels brought the news. Allah answered Zakariya’s dua while he was in the act of worship. SubhanAllah.

This is a lesson worth pausing on with your child: Zakariya (AS) did not receive the answer while sitting idle. He was praying. He was worshipping. The answer came while he was close to Allah.

4. Zakariya (AS) Was Astonished When He Heard the News

Even a prophet, in a moment of such overwhelming surprise, can respond with wonder.

Zakariya (AS) was astonished. Not disbelieving — never disbelieving — but filled with awe. He asked: How, my Lord? My wife cannot have children, and I am so very old.

Qāla rabbi annā yakūnu lī ghulāmun wa kānati mra’atī ‘āqiran wa qad balagtu mina l-kibari ‘itiyyā

“He said: My Lord, how will I have a boy when my wife has been barren and I have reached extreme old age?” (Maryam 19:8)

And Allah’s answer? Simple. Perfect. Final:

Qāla kadhālika qāla rabbuka huwa ‘alayya hayyinun

“[An angel] said, “Thus [it will be]; your Lord says, ‘It is easy for Me’” (Maryam 19:9)

Tell your child: When something feels impossible to us — it is easy for Allah. That is the answer to every “but how?” we ever ask.

StageZakariya’s (AS) ResponseLesson for Children
Hearing the newsAmazement and wonderIt’s okay to feel surprised by Allah’s mercy
Asking “how?”Honest, humble questioningWe can ask Allah to help us understand
Accepting Allah’s answerComplete trust and submissionFaith means accepting even what we cannot explain

5. The Sign Allah Gave Zakariya (AS)

Zakariya (AS) asked Allah for a sign — a special confirmation of this miraculous promise.

Allah gave him a remarkable sign: for three days, Zakariya (AS) would not be able to speak — not because he was sick, but as a miracle, a mark of this extraordinary gift. His voice would return, but for three days, he could only communicate with gestures.

Zakariya (AS) came out of the sanctuary to his people and signaled to them: glorify Allah in the morning and in the evening.

Three days of silence. Three days of gratitude without words — only the dhikr in his heart.

Tell your child: Allah’s biggest gifts sometimes come with a reminder — to slow down, to be grateful, to let the miracle sink in before you rush to talk about it.

In our experience teaching children at Buruj Academy, this part of the story resonates deeply with young learners. Children understand the idea of something so big, so wonderful, that you are momentarily speechless.

6. Prophet Yahya (AS) is Zakariya’s Miracle Son

The baby was born. Zakariya’s (AS) dua had been answered in full.

The child was named Yahya — a name that, as scholars of Tafsir note, had never been given to anyone before him. Allah Himself chose the name. Allah Himself described what this child would be.

Yā Yaḥyā khudhi l-kitāba bi-quwwatin wa ātaynāhu l-ḥukma ṣabiyyā

“O Yahya, take the Scripture with determination. And We gave him judgment while yet a boy.” (Maryam 19:12)

Tell your child: While Yahya (AS) was still a child — still young, like you — Allah gave him wisdom. Allah can give wisdom to anyone, at any age, when He wills.

Yahya (AS) grew up as a pure, devoted prophet. The Quran describes him with three qualities that are beautiful to share with children:

  • Caring for his parents — he was never harsh or disobedient
  • Pure and free from sin — Allah described him as pure from his very birth
  • Full of reverence for Allah — he had deep, deep love and respect for his Lord

Exploring the lives of the prophets builds a child’s love for the Quran from an early age. Our Islamic Studies Classes for Kids at Buruj Academy guide children through these stories with age-appropriate depth and genuine scholarly grounding.

What Does the Story of Zakariya Teach Our Children?

Frequently Asked Questions About the Story of Zakariya in the Quran

Where Is the Story of Zakariya Mentioned in the Quran?

The story of Zakariya (AS) appears in three main surahs: Surah Maryam (19:2–11), Surah Aal-Imran (3:37–41), and Surah Al-Anbiya (21:89–90). Surah Maryam contains the most detailed and moving account, including Zakariya’s private dua, the angels’ announcement, and the birth of Yahya (AS).

Who Is Prophet Zakariya’s Son in the Quran?

Prophet Zakariya’s (AS) son is Prophet Yahya (AS), known as John the Baptist in the Christian tradition. Allah named him Yahya — a name never given before — and granted him wisdom and righteousness from childhood, as stated in Surah Maryam 19:12.

What Dua Did Zakariya (AS) Make in the Quran?

Zakariya (AS) made a private, heartfelt dua asking Allah for a righteous son to continue his prophetic mission. He acknowledged his old age and his wife’s inability to conceive, yet placed complete trust in Allah’s power. His dua is recorded in Surah Maryam 19:3–6 and Surah Al-Anbiya 21:89.

Why Did Zakariya (AS) Lose His Voice for Three Days?

The three days of silence were a miraculous sign from Allah — a confirmation of the promise of Yahya’s birth, and a mark of profound gratitude. During this time, Zakariya (AS) communicated only through gestures and devoted himself entirely to the remembrance of Allah. It is described in Surah Maryam 19:10.

What Lesson Can Children Learn from Prophet Zakariya (AS)?

Children can learn that sincere dua — made privately, humbly, and with full trust in Allah — is always heard. Zakariya (AS) teaches that no situation is too difficult for Allah to change, and that patience and continued worship always lead to Allah’s mercy and reward.
