The Story of Maryam in the Quran for Kids
Key Takeaways
Maryam (AS) is the only woman mentioned by name in the Quran, appearing in over 30 verses across multiple surahs.
Allah chose Maryam above all women of the world, as stated directly in Surah Aal-Imran (3:42), making her uniquely honored in Islam.
Maryam miraculously received food from Allah in her prayer chamber, witnessed by her guardian Zakariyya (AS), proving her exceptional piety.
The birth of Isa (AS) was a divine miracle — Maryam conceived without a father, by Allah’s command “Be,” and it was.
Maryam spoke bravely to her people after Isa’s birth, and the infant Isa (AS) spoke from his cradle to defend his mother’s honor.

Every child deserves to hear stories that fill their heart with wonder and their soul with faith. The Quran holds some of the most beautiful stories ever told — and the story of Maryam (AS) is among the most breathtaking of them all.

The story of Maryam in the Quran is the story of a pure, devoted young woman chosen by Allah above all women, tested with an extraordinary miracle, and given the strength to face her community with complete trust in Him. It is a story for every child — and every parent — to carry in their heart.

1. Maryam Was a Chosen Child Even Before She Was Born

Long before Maryam (AS) took her first breath, her story had already begun in the most special way.

Her mother, Hanna, made a sincere promise to Allah. She was expecting a baby, and she vowed that her child would be dedicated entirely to serving Allah’s house — the great Masjid in Jerusalem called Bayt al-Maqdis. She hoped for a boy, as was the custom for those who served the masjid.

But when the baby arrived, it was a girl.

Hanna was surprised, but she did not break her promise. With complete trust in Allah, she said:

رَبِّ إِنِّي وَضَعْتُهَا أُنثَىٰ

Rabbi innī waḍaʿtuhā unthā

“My Lord, I have delivered a female.” (Aal-Imran 3:36)

She named her baby Maryam — and she asked Allah to protect her daughter and all her future children from Shaytan.

Allah accepted her prayer. He accepted the gift of little Maryam. And He had plans for this baby girl that no one could have imagined.

2. Allah Gave Maryam a Special Guardian Named Zakariyya

When Maryam was still a small child, the people of the masjid — who were all teachers and scholars — wanted the honor of raising her.

Every single one of them wanted to be her guardian. So they did something fair: they cast lots, drawing straws to decide who would care for her. The honor fell to a great Prophet named Zakariyya (AS) — a wise, elderly man who was also her relative.

Zakariyya (AS) built Maryam a special room inside the masjid called a mihrab — a private prayer chamber just for her. There, she would spend her days in worship, learning, and remembrance of Allah.

And from the very beginning, Maryam (AS) showed everyone that she was no ordinary child.

3. Allah Sent Maryam Food From Paradise

One day, Zakariyya (AS) went to check on young Maryam in her chamber. What he found stopped him completely.

There was food in front of her — fresh fruit and provisions that had not been there before. Food that was completely out of season. Fruit that could not have come from anywhere nearby.

He asked her, with great wonder in his voice:

يَٰمَرۡيَمُ أَنَّىٰ لَكِ هَٰذَا

Yā Maryamu annā laki hādhā

“O Mary, from where is this [coming] to you?” (Aal-Imran 3:37)

And Maryam (AS) answered with the quiet confidence of someone who knew exactly where her blessings came from:

“It is from Allah. Indeed, Allah provides for whom He wills without account.”

This moment was so powerful that it moved Zakariyya (AS) to make a du’a of his own — right there and then — asking Allah for a child. Because he saw, in Maryam’s food, that Allah gives without limits to those He loves.

Maryam (AS) was still a young girl. And she was already teaching the Prophet beside her about the generosity of Allah.

4. The Angels Gave Maryam the Greatest News a Woman Ever Heard

As Maryam (AS) grew, her worship and devotion only deepened. She was known for her purity, her dedication, and her complete focus on Allah.

Then one day, something extraordinary happened.

The angels came to her with a message so significant that Allah recorded it in the Quran forever:

وَإِذۡ قَالَتِ ٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ يَٰمَرۡيَمُ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ ٱصۡطَفَىٰكِ وَطَهَّرَكِ وَٱصۡطَفَىٰكِ عَلَىٰ نِسَآءِ ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ

Wa idh qālatil-malā’ikatu yā Maryamu innallāhastafāki wa ṭahharaki wastafāki ‘alā nisā’il-‘ālamīn

“And [mention] when the angels said, “O Mary, indeed Allah has chosen you and purified you and chosen you above the women of the worlds.'” (Aal-Imran 3:42)

Imagine being a young woman and hearing these words from the angels of Allah.

Above all the women. In all the worlds. In all of time.

That was Maryam (AS).

The angels told her to worship, to bow, and to prostrate with those who prostrate. And she did — with her whole heart.

In our sessions at Buruj Academy, when children hear this verse for the first time, many of them go completely quiet. Something in these words touches even the youngest hearts. That is the miracle of the Quran.

5. Maryam Went Alone to a Faraway Place in the East

When Maryam (AS) had grown into a young woman, something began that would test her in a way no one had ever been tested before.

She felt she needed to be alone. She withdrew from her family and went to a place in the east — away from everyone she knew.

And then, a figure appeared before her.

It was the Angel Jibreel (AS) — but he appeared to her in the form of a man. Maryam was immediately frightened. She had no idea who this was or why he had come to her in this secluded place.

With complete courage and firm faith, she said: “I seek refuge from you in the Most Merciful, if you are fearing of Allah.”

She protected herself with the name of Allah — alone, afraid, but trusting completely in her Lord.

Jibreel (AS) quickly reassured her. He told her he was a messenger from Allah, sent with the most astonishing news she would ever hear.

6. Allah Gave Maryam the Miracle of a Son Without a Father

Jibreel (AS) told Maryam (AS) that Allah was going to give her a son.

Maryam was bewildered. She had never been touched by any man. She was pure and devoted. How could she have a child?

قَالَتۡ أَنَّىٰ يَكُونُ لِي غُلَٰمٌ وَلَمۡ يَمۡسَسۡنِي بَشَرٌ

Qālat annā yakūnu lī ghulāmun wa lam yamsasnī basharun

“She said, ‘How can I have a boy while no man has touched me?'” (Maryam 19:20)

Jibreel (AS) answered her simply and powerfully. He told her that Allah says: it is easy for Me. And that this son would be a sign for all people — a mercy from Allah.

Then Jibreel (AS) breathed the divine command of Allah into her, and Maryam (AS) conceived — by Allah’s will alone — the Prophet Isa (AS).

This was not magic. This was not a trick. This was the same Allah who created Adam (AS) from dust, with no mother and no father. For Allah, all things are possible. He only says “Be” — and it is.

ProphetHow They Were CreatedBy Whose Command
Adam (AS)From dust — no father, no motherAllah’s command
Hawa (AS)From Adam — no motherAllah’s command
Isa (AS)From Maryam — no fatherAllah’s command
All othersFrom both parentsAllah’s command

Every creation, in every form, belongs entirely to Allah.

7. Maryam Gave Birth Alone Under a Palm Tree

The time came for Maryam (AS) to give birth. She was alone. Far from her family. Frightened and in pain.

She walked until she reached a faraway place, and she leaned against a palm tree as the birth began. In that moment of exhaustion and longing, she said something deeply human:

“Oh, I wish I had died before this and was in oblivion, forgotten.”

She was not losing her faith. She was expressing her pain — the pain of a woman facing something no one had ever faced before. And Allah, in His mercy, answered her immediately.

A voice called out to her — some scholars say it was Jibreel (AS), others say it was baby Isa (AS) from beneath her. The message was full of tenderness:

“Do not grieve. Your Lord has provided beneath you a stream. And shake toward you the trunk of the palm tree — it will drop upon you ripe, fresh dates.”

Allah had prepared everything for her. A stream of fresh water. Dates to give her strength. Comfort in her loneliness. Rest in her exhaustion.

8. Maryam Carried Her Baby Home and Faced Her Community with Courage

After resting, eating the dates, and drinking from the stream, Maryam (AS) wrapped her newborn baby in her arms and began the walk back to her family.

She was carrying the Prophet Isa (AS) — and she knew what people would say when they saw her.

When Maryam (AS) arrived with the infant, her people were shocked and angry. They could not believe what they were seeing. They said harsh and painful things to her — accusing her of something terrible.

Maryam (AS) said nothing. She only pointed — with complete calm — to her newborn son.

Her people were confused. How could she expect them to speak to a baby?

And then — the baby spoke.

9. The Baby Isa (AS) Spoke from the Cradle to Defend His Mother

The infant Isa (AS), just days old, lifted his voice and spoke clearly to the crowd of adults standing before him:

قَالَ إِنِّي عَبۡدُ ٱللَّهِ ءَاتَىٰنِيَ ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ وَجَعَلَنِي نَبِيًّا

Qāla innī ‘abdullāhi ātāniyal-kitāba wa ja’alanī nabiyyā

“He said, ‘Indeed, I am the servant of Allah. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet.'” (Maryam 19:30)

The baby told them he was a servant of Allah. That Allah had given him a book. That he was a Prophet. That he had been made blessed wherever he would go. That he would pray and give charity all his life. And that peace was upon him — the day he was born, the day he would die, and the day he would be raised alive again.

The crowd fell silent.

No human baby had ever spoken. No one could deny what they had just witnessed. Maryam (AS) had been innocent all along — and Allah had sent the most miraculous proof possible, from the lips of her newborn son.

Maryam (AS) had trusted Allah completely. And Allah had defended her in the most powerful way imaginable.
