Quran Verse About Hijab

Every Muslim woman who wears hijab, or who is exploring the obligation, deserves to understand exactly what Allah says — not just a paraphrase or a cultural summary. The Quran addresses modesty directly, precisely, and with unmistakable command language.

The primary Quran verses about hijab are found in Surah An-Nur (24:31) and Surah Al-Ahzab (33:59). Together, these two ayat establish the Islamic ruling on covering, specify what must be covered, and address whom the command applies to.

What Does the Quran Say About Hijab?

Surah An-Nur 24:31 is the most detailed hijab ayah in the Quran. It commands believing women to lower their gaze, guard their private parts, not display their adornments except what is apparent, and — most critically — to draw their khimar (head covering) over their chest.

This verse also specifies the categories of people before whom a woman may remove her covering, making it one of the most legally precise verses in the Quran.

وَقُل لِّلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتِ يَغْضُضْنَ مِنْ أَبْصَـٰرِهِنَّ وَيَحْفَظْنَ فُرُوجَهُنَّ وَلَا يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ إِلَّا مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا ۖ وَلْيَضْرِبْنَ بِخُمُرِهِنَّ عَلَىٰ جُيُوبِهِنَّ

Wa qul lil-mu’minaati yaghdudna min absaarihinna wa yahfazna furoojahunna wa laa yubdeena zeenatahunna illaa maa zahara minhaa wal-yadribna bikhumurihinna ‘alaa juyoobihinn

“And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their head covers over their chests.” (An-Nur 24:31)

Why the Arabic Word “Khimar” Matters

The Arabic word خُمُر (khumur) is the plural of khimar — a garment specifically designed to cover the head. This is not a generic word for cloth or covering. Classical Arabic dictionaries define khimar explicitly as a head covering. When Allah uses this specific term, it removes all ambiguity: the covering commanded includes the head.

The verb وَلْيَضْرِبْنَ (wal-yadribna) — meaning “let them strike/draw” — carries the sense of pulling the garment firmly and decisively over the chest.

The pre-Islamic women of Arabia wore a khimar on the head but left their chest exposed. This verse corrected that practice directly and specifically.

In our experience at Buruj’s Tafseer Al-Quran Course, students who study these verses through proper Tafsir — rather than reading an English translation alone — often describe it as a moment of genuine transformation in understanding.

When a student grasps that khimar specifically means head covering and juyoob specifically means chest, the verse stops feeling like a cultural debate and starts reading as a clear, loving divine command.

Where Does It Say in the Quran to Wear Hijab?

The Quran says to wear Hijab in Surah An-Nur 24:31, which is the most detailed hijab ayah in the Quran. Also, Surah Al-Ahzab 33:59 is the second primary hijab ayat in the Quran and is often the verse cited when Muslims ask where exactly the Quran commands hijab.

This verse was revealed to address a specific social context and extends its command to all believing women, not only the Prophet’s household.

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّبِىُّ قُل لِّأَزْوَٰجِكَ وَبَنَاتِكَ وَنِسَآءِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يُدْنِينَ عَلَيْهِنَّ مِن جَلَـٰبِيبِهِنَّ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ أَدْنَىٰٓ أَن يُعْرَفْنَ فَلَا يُؤْذَيْنَ

Yaa ayyuhan-Nabiyyu qul li-azwaajika wa banaatika wa nisaa’il-mu’mineena yudneena ‘alayhinna min jalaabeebihinn. Dhaalika adnaa an yu’rafna fa-laa yu’dhayn

“O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused.” (Al-Ahzab 33:59)

The Meaning of “Jalabib” in Classical Arabic

The word جَلَابِيب (jalabib) is the plural of jilbab — a large outer garment worn over regular clothing. Al-Qurtubi describes it as a garment that covers the head and body entirely.

The command يُدْنِينَ (yudneena) — “to bring down” or “draw close” — indicates a deliberate and complete covering, not a partial or symbolic gesture.

This verse is notable because it includes three categories explicitly: the Prophet’s wives, his daughters, and the women of the believers (نِسَآءِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ). The inclusion of this third category establishes that the command is universal — it is not restricted to the Prophet’s household.

Other Hijab Ayat in the Quran

While Surah An-Nur 24:31 and Surah Al-Ahzab 33:59 are the primary hijab verses, the Quran addresses modesty in additional related contexts.

Understanding these supporting verses gives a fuller picture of how Islam approaches the concept of covering and modesty (haya).

VerseSurahCore Ruling
24:30An-NurCommands believing men to lower their gaze
24:31An-NurCommands women to cover and not display adornments
33:53Al-AhzabCommands speaking to the Prophet’s wives from behind a hijab/screen
33:59Al-AhzabCommands outer garments for all believing women
33:33Al-AhzabCommands the Prophet’s wives to remain dignified in their homes

Surah An-Nur 24:30 — the verse immediately preceding the women’s hijab command — establishes that modesty is a shared obligation. Men are commanded first to lower their gaze before women are addressed. Classical scholars note this sequencing is deliberate: modesty is a societal framework, not a burden placed on women alone.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Quran Verse About Hijab

What Is the Main Quran Verse About Hijab?

The main Quran verse about hijab is Surah An-Nur 24:31, which commands believing women to draw their khimar (head covering) over their chests and not display their adornments to non-mahram men. Surah Al-Ahzab 33:59 is the second primary verse, commanding all believing women to draw their outer garments (jalabib) over themselves when going out.

Where Does It Say in the Quran to Wear Hijab?

The Quran commands hijab in two main locations: An-Nur 24:31 and Al-Ahzab 33:59. An-Nur 24:31 addresses the specifics of what must be covered and who may see a woman’s adornments. Al-Ahzab 33:59 commands the outer garment specifically, with the stated purpose that believing women be recognized and protected from harm.

What Does the Hijab Ayah in Surah An-Nur Actually Say in Arabic?

The key phrase in An-Nur 24:31 is وَلْيَضْرِبْنَ بِخُمُرِهِنَّ عَلَىٰ جُيُوبِهِنَّ — commanding women to draw their khumur (head coverings) over their juyoob (chest openings). The word khumur is the plural of khimar, which classical Arabic dictionaries define explicitly as a head covering, making the command linguistically unambiguous.

Is Hijab Mentioned Only in the Quran or Also in Hadith?

Hijab is established in both the Quran and authentic hadith. The Quran provides the primary obligation in An-Nur 24:31 and Al-Ahzab 33:59. Authentic hadith — including the narration in Sunan Abi Dawud 4104 — clarify the practical scope of the covering requirement, particularly regarding the face and hands.
