Wa-driblahum mathala al-hayati al-dunya kama’in anzalnahu mina al-sama’i fakhtalaṭa bihi nabatu al-arḍi fa-asbaḥa hashiman tadhruhu al-riyah

“And present to them the example of the life of this world, [its being] like rain which We send down from the sky, and the vegetation of the earth mingles with it and [then] it becomes dry remnants, scattered by the winds.” (Al-Kahf 18:45)

2. Worldly Life Is a Test, Not a Destination

“Who created death and life to test you as to which of you is best in deed.” (Al-Mulk 67:2)

IAAlamoo annama alhayatu alddunya laAAibun walahwun wazeenatun watafakhurun baynakum watakathurun fee alamwali waalawladi kamathali ghaythin aAAjaba alkuffara nabatuhu thumma yaheeju fatarahu musfarran thumma yakoonu hutaman wafee alakhirati AAathabun shadeedun wamaghfiratun mina Allahi waridwanun wama alhayatu alddunya illa mataAAu alghuroori (20)

“Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children – like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris. And in the Hereafter is severe punishment and forgiveness from Allah and approval. And what is the worldly life except the enjoyment of delusion.” (Al-Hadid 57:20)

The Quran here lists five stages of worldly distraction: play, amusement, beautification, boasting, and accumulation.

وَمَا أُوتِيتُم مِّن شَيْءٍ فَمَتَاعُ الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا وَزِينَتُهَا وَمَا عِندَ اللَّهِ خَيْرٌ وَأَبْقَىٰ أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ

Wa-mā ūtītum min shay’in fa-matāʿu al-ḥayāti al-dunyā wa-zīnatuhā wa-mā ʿinda Allāhi khayrun wa-abqā afalā taʿqilūn

“And whatever thing you have been given — it is but the enjoyment of worldly life and its adornment. And what is with Allah is better and more lasting; so will you not use reason?” (Al-Qasas 28:60)

Alladhīna yastaḥibbūna al-ḥayāta al-dunyā ʿalā al-ākhirati wa-yaṣuddūna ʿan sabīli Allāh

“The ones who prefer the worldly life over the Hereafter and avert [people] from the way of Allah, seeking to make it (seem) deviant. Those are in extreme error..” (Ibrahim 14:3)
